I've noticed that I'm losing loads of hair. I first noticed that when I'd had a bath there were loads of hairs left in the tub. My hair is long and brown so it is quite noticeable against the white bath. If I run my fingers gently through my hair, each time there are hairs left on my fingers. I didn't get this when on Mtx before and I haven't restarted it yet (waiting for virus to clear up) so it's not this. I know it's listed as a side effect of hydroxychloroquine but I am shocked at the amount. I'll be bald soon! I have suspected lupus as well as confirmed RA so I'm wondering if it could be that. I also wonder whether RA itself could be affecting my follicles. Any ideas? I'm not too bothered now but I might be if I get visible bald patches. But I'd rather be bald than have excruciating joint pain. Naomi x

Since I started Methotrexate I have definitely noticed more lost hair when I come out of the shower. I was told to up the Folic Acid to help with this and I notice a difference if I forget the folic acid.

I don't know how long you have been off the Methotrexate but it can stay in your system for some time so this could be the cause. Definitely something to speak about to your GP or rheumy team when you get the chance.

However, saying that my Daughter who is 16 loses an incredible amount of hair. Hers is long also. We spoke to her GP the last time she had an appointment, and our GP said it was quite healthy to lose hair and she herself who has long dark hair, cannot visit her friend who has a cream carpet as it looks as if she has pulled out all her hair during her visit.

Definitely take some advice.

Interested in what you say. Been on methotrexate since 2007. My hair went unusually curly and still can be!! Difficult when hands are too sore to do anything about it.

Hi guys,

As well as the 6 week folic acid I used to take the occasional course of zinc to help with hair problems and methotrexate. It seemed to work for me, but that's not to say it will work for others! Best thing, in my opinion, is keep hair short, don't over wash or use too many products and get it cut regularly!!

Hi Dotty

Hello and welcome, pleased you have found us ! Funny you should say about your hair, mine seems to be curlier, had a semi-permanent perm months ago and I still very curly.

Best wishes Julia x

Hi Naomi,
My daughter has SLE as you know and when she experienced hair loss (she also has long hair) she was told to try selenium which did help. Have you tried that? Just make sure its okay to take it first.
Hugs - Kim.
